In the 18th century, the fashionable sons of the gentry took a lengthy "gap year" Grand Tour to Italy, not only for its culture but also for its entertainment! This course goes with them to Naples, Rome, Florence and Venice to enjoy both art and architecture. It looks at the souvenirs they brought back in painting and sculpture, ideas for building new houses, and their contribution to founding the British Museum.

Glenis Kerr Elliott BA (Hons), MA, PGCE is an art historian with particular interest in architecture and is fascinated by the effects of the Grand Tour on the interiors of Britain. She is currently reading for a PhD and enjoys teaching for the WEA.

Born out of the ideals of John Ruskin, William Morris, Philip Webb, Charles Ashbee and a host of other craftsmen, writers and social reformers from the mid 19th to the early 20th century, the movement was based on principles of integrity and social reform and its hallmarks are simple designs, beautiful materials and honest craftsmanship. This course will focus on the Arts and Crafts Movement in England and Scotland with reference to the important role women played in the development of the Glasgow Style, which was not the case in the early years of the English Movement where middle class male architects dominated.

Eileen Marston lives in Reading where she studied the History of Art and Architecture for her BA at the University of Reading. She is passionate about 20th Century British Art, which she feels is a much neglected area of Art History.
